“Punk: Chaos to Couture” Exhibit at the MET

Last week the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that punk fashion will be the focus of the Costume Institute’s spring 2013 exhibition and also the theme of its annual Met Costume Institute gala on May 6. The gala which will be co-chaired by Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara,  Moda Operandi founder Lauren Santo Domingo, and of-course Vogue editor extraordinaire Anna Wintour, will highlight the “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibit with a design created by fashion photographer Nick Knight and Raul Avila.

Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Yohji Yamamoto, Azzedine Alaia, and Ann Demeulemeester are some of the designers featured out of a long laundry list of fashion icons.

The gallery sections are organized thematically and will include “Rebel Heroes” which will conjure the New York and Londonmusic scenes of the mid-1970s, ”CouturiersSituationists” Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s 430 King’s Road boutique fashion and graphics, “Pavilions of Anarchy and Elegance” punk versus haute couture, “Punk Couture” haute hardware including studs, spikes, chains, and safety pins, “D.I.Y. Style” recycled materials from trash culture, and “La Mode Destroy” rip-it-to-shreds and deconstructed fashion.

PUNK: Chaos to Couture on view from May 9 through August 11, 2013 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
